We had a fun dinner just down the street. That’s one thing better about both our location and here and in Venice than in Florence – many restaurants and shops really close by. You don’t really have to go out searching too much. Anyway, dinner itself wasn’t all that special, but it was crazy how people would come in trying to sell things or get money. Two guys came in (separately) to sell people first roses and then jewelry! It’s one thing to have them come up to you in the street, but that was something new. Two musicians also came in, one on violin and one with a cello or some other large string instrument. At the end the guy had a had to put money in, but the great part was that there was a group of people eating at a table behind us, and the one guy just started belting out fake lyrics to the music opera-style. It was music from operas, including the already familiar opening song of La Traviata. I wish I could understand what the guy was saying. I mean, it could have been gibberish, but it was probably some really funny random stuff. |

OH WHAT A MAGICAL ADVENTURE.
A co-worker and I went to see Mary Poppins, which it turns out is closing on Sunday and completely sold-out for its remaining days. So no seeing it again. Alas.
( You've got enough brass for all of us )
By the way, one thing I discovered last night while wandering about looking for cheap tickets is that Busman's Honeymoon is being performed on the North Side. Trying to decide whether I should go. It's gotten very good reviews, but is Peter being played by Edward Petherbridge? I should think not. Or hope not, as he's 73. Plus I haven't finished the book. But I do know that DLS says the plot isn't so important. |

Celebrated mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato stumbled while crossing the stage early in the show, sparking an immediate and intense pain in her ankle area. The damage was announced as a sprain and, in true professional fashion, she finished the performance on a crutch- even decorating it with a flower and using it as a prop during her angrier scenes.
It was later discovered that she had in fact broken her fibula and, for the time being, is stuck in a wheelchair. Determined to fulfill her commitment, the Kansas native will continue with the production, singing Rosina from a wheelchair wearing a vaguely concealed cast.
Joyce DiDonato, I don't exactly love your singing, but I like you quite a lot.
She and Juan Diego Florez actually seem to sing Rossini together a lot. And they're really cute. I posted adorabibble pics of their Cinderella here at this awesome place, and I totally had another Barber picspam...hmmmmmmmm.
Oh! Behold, Almaviva and Rosina (there's also a movie quote game there that was neeeever finished, because...my flist didn't watch the right sort of movies apparently. ridiculousness). When I was asking DiDonato some things about Rosina concerning the Figaro continuation, one of the people she was with asked if that was a Dorothy L. Sayers book under my arm. And yes, yes it was. Possibly The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club. So she associates with good people.
( More Almaviva and Rosina Cuteness, Under a Cut Because I'm Nice )
On another opera-y note, Susan Graham's singing at Ravinia next Monday and I am totes going. And I shall look upon her and her tallness, and say, while squinting, "she doesn't look so tall from back here." And then people will say "Quiet! We're trying to hear!" And I'll say "YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT, SIR." |

| CDC ALERT |
[Jul. 7th, 2009|02:21 pm] |
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued a medical alert about a highly contagious, potentially dangerous new virus that is transmitted orally, by hand, and even electronically.
This virus is known as Weekly Overload Recreational Killer (WORK). If you receive WORK from your boss, a colleague, or anyone else, via any means whatsoever, do not touch it! This virus will wipe out your private life entirely. If you should come into contact with WORK, you should immediately leave the premises. Take two good friends, proceed immediately to the nearest bar or liquor store, and purchase one or both of the recommended antidotes — Work Isolating Neutralization Extract (WINE) or Bothersome Employer Elimination Rebooster (BEER). Consume the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.
You should immediately forward this medical alert to five friends. If you do not have five friends, you have already been infected and WORK is, sadly, controlling your life. |

One of my favorite Adam Lambert performances from AI was "Feelin' Good" from Anthony Newley's The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd.
One of my favorite singers is John Barrowman, star of Broadway, West End London, and BBC's Torchwood. Since Torchwood Season Three premieres tonight on BBC One, here is John singing "Feelin' Good" from his album Another Side.

Every lunch hour that I can manage it, I eat in this little conference room, do Sudoku, then lie down on the carpet and listen to my iPod. It's how I remain sane. I didn't do it one day (I instead opted for frozen yogurt with a co-worker) and promptly felt like dying when I came back to the reception desk.
Today's selection was first my Alex/Elliot playlist (my crackship lives, it is just very quiet), then, because they share a song, I went to PalinMix 2.0.
For new flist people, a certain other flister and I were rather prominent members of the kickass group known as palin_confusion (or p_c for short) and made not one, but two fanmixes. Yes, fanmixes. My dilemma today, as I lay on the conference room carpet, was which one I like more. They have their own pluses. The second one is geared more towards the end of the campaign and has the SNL Palin Rap, while the first was made in the heady early days, when we first made up the Magic Whalebone Bracelet mythology and got really excited when she wore her hair down.
I don't know if this question will ever be solved in my brain. What I do know, however, is that Sara Benincasa made a new Palin vlog. And it is hilarious.
I started Jericho last night as I was falling asleep, then turned it off as I realized I didn't want the last thought in my head for the night to be a seven-year-old girl getting a tracheotomy. So I watched some of The IT Crowd and passed out. Huzzah. |
